What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a system of health care that focuses on the body’s
neuromuscular system, or the nerves, muscles and skeleton of the body.
Your nervous system controls how you move and feel. A healthy, well-aligned
spinal column that moves with a full range of motion allows the nervous
system to perform at optimum levels.
Spinal misalignment can disrupt nerve transmission, which can cause
your body’s vital systems, including your immune system, to malfunction.
Misalignment can be caused by injuries, falls, repetitive motion, poor
posture and daily stress.
Chiropractors are trained in a variety of diagnostic methods to examine
and treat the neuromuscular system through the use of highly specialized,
hands-on healing techniques. Their goal is to maintain or return the
patient to optimum health by restoring and maintaining nerve and joint
function.
While chiropractors focus on injury prevention, pain management and
healing, they take a holistic approach to total body health. Therefore,
they may hold one or more specialty degrees including pediatrics, radiology,
sports injuries, nutrition, acupuncture and orthopedics.
The Safety of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care is safe for people of all ages from infants to the
elderly. Research shows that patient risk is much lower for chiropractic
care when compared to medical care, due to the risks associated with
prescription drugs and surgery.
Chiropractic care delivered from my office is very safe. That's because
it is being delivered by a licensed practitioner and staff, and risk
factors are identified in patients before any type of care is administered.
Long Term Restoration
Chiropractic is based on the premise that good health and mobility rely
on a normal functioning
nervous system and a healthy spine. Your nervous system controls how
you move and how you feel.
Your spinal column, which is comprised of 24 movable joints, is the
pathway for your spinal nerves. Compression,
irritation or stretching of these nerves can cause disruption of the
energy flow to cells, organs, and tissues
throughout the body.
A chiropractor can provide immediate relief by correcting the spinal
position and restore joint motion through hands-on chiropractic techniques.
However, even more importantly, a chiropractor can help restore the spinal
curve to its normal position to prevent further problems.
Spinal Degeneration
Life is tough on your spine. Daily stress, accidents, athletic injuries,
poor posture, improper lifting, repetitive movements
and spinal conditions present at birth can traumatize the spine causing
misalignments, bone spurs, thinning discs (arthritis) and fusion
of discs. While this degeneration may or may not cause pain and discomfort,
continued degeneration causes further trauma on the spine.
As a Chiropractor, I Can Help You Fight Spinal Degeneration
I may be able to help you prevent, slow or even stop spinal degeneration.
I can evaluate, treat and even teach you how to
strengthen and protect your back with a healthy lifestyle including exercises,
proper movement and nutrition.
The Stages of Degeneration
Spinal degeneration develops over time. Symptoms of pain, numbness and
immobility may or may not occur.
Phase I
Subluxation or Misalignment
Spinal degeneration usually begins when a
vertebral joint is moved out of position by incorrect movement or injury.
Misalignment prevents
proper joint movement, which in turn places stress on the adjacent
joints and discs and results in nerve irritation. Symptoms, such as
pain, muscle stiffness, headaches or numbness, may not appear until
years later.
Phase II
Bone Spurs
A thinning of the disc further aggravates the vertebrae and
may cause bone spurs. Symptoms may be nonexistent or consist of increased
pain,
stiffness or numbness. The resulting inability to move comfortably can
result in further degeneration.
Phase III
Advanced Degeneration or Fusion
The disc has now become almost completely
worn which allows the vertebrae to touch and eventually grow together
or fuse. The nerves may become
pinched by bone spurs or the flattened disc. At this stage, the patient
may still be symptom free, or range of motion may be severely limited.
