The nervous system controls the systems and functions of the human
body. A misalignment of the spinal joints can pinch the nerves and
interfere with normal nerve function, thus causing health problems.
Misalignment can be caused by injuries, accidents, poor posture, improper
lifting, repetitive motion, poor body conditioning or even congenital
conditions.
An active partnership between you and your chiropractor
can help ensure a healthy spine.
What you can do to prevent pain.
Practice Correct Posture
Stand tall, avoid slouching, balance your
weight on the ball of your feet, slightly bend your knees, wear proper
fitting shoes with good support. When sitting don’t move your neck
forward, raise your viewing surface to eye level, sit straight.
Exercise
Maintain strength and flexibility of the back, leg and abdominal
muscles.
Lift Correctly
Keep feet shoulder width apart, bend at the knees, keep
your stomach muscles tight. Twist with your feet when you lift, keep
the load close to your body, never reach.
Good Nutrition and a Healthy Lifestyle
Eat lots of fruits and vegetables,
get adequate sleep, avoid excessive alcohol, fat, stimulants and tobacco.
What you can do at home to alleviate pain.
First 72 Hours
Place ice on the affected area for 20 minutes every
hour.
3 to 4 Day Old Pain
Use ice for 5 minutes, then heat for 5 minutes.
Continue alternating end with ice. (25 min.)
Old, Chronic Pain (arthritis, bursitis)
Moist heat for 15 to 20 minutes
every hour.
Assume a Correct Sleeping Position
Back – Sleep on your side with
a pillow between the knees or on your back with a pillow under your knees.
Do not sleep on your stomach. Neck – Roll a small towel and put
it under neck while sleeping on your back or side.
How your chiropractor can help.
In addition to spinal adjustments, I provide a series of therapeutic
treatments and modalities that can relieve pain.
Interferential Electro-Therapy
Tiny amounts of electrical impulses
create low-frequency stimulation of the injured tissues which causes
the body to give off endorphins and other natural pain killers to help
alleviate pain.
Ultrasound
High frequency sound vibrations penetrate tissues deep in
the body, which creates a heat response. The combination of heat and
vibrations help break down and disperse unhealthy calcium and other hard
tissue accumulations.
Trigger Point Therapy
An area of uncontrolled muscle tightness, or trigger
point, is released by compressing the muscle with sustained pressure
from a hand, fingers, elbow or small instrument.
Intersegmental Traction
While lying face-up on a table, roller-type
cams beneath the surface slowly travel the length of the spine. The gentle
rolling action exercising the spine without effort.
