Q. What kind of education and training do chiropractors have?
A. Chiropractic care is recognized as an authentic and beneficial medical
procedure. Chiropractors are subject to rigorous requirements before
obtaining their certification to practice. They are educated as primary
contact health care practitioners with an emphasis on neuromuscular diagnosis
and treatment. Students of chiropractic undergo basic training the biological
and health sciences, specialized training in the chiropractic discipline,
and extensive clinical training. California requires a minimum of five
academic years of study including 4,200 hours of classroom instruction
and clinical training.
Q. What exactly is a chiropractic adjustment?
A. A chiropractic adjustment or manipulation is any chiropractic therapeutic
procedure that uses controlled force, leverage, direction, strength and
speed at a specific joint to restore normal motion and function thus
relieving muscle spasms, pain and nerve irritation.
Q. Is it effective?
A. Scientific literature contains many studies – including
government-funded studies – which have found that, chiropractic
care, along with an effective exercise program, is an appropriate action
to take to relieve short-term back or neck pain.
Q. Has the safety of chiropractic been scientifically proven?
A. Chiropractic adjustments are natural, non-invasive, highly
effective procedures. Considerable data on the safety of chiropractic
care has been published in the scientific literature. A study commissioned
by the Ontario Ministry of Health concluded that all the literature
demonstrates that chiropractic spinal manipulation is safe in the treatment
of low back pain. In fact, the studies further suggest that it is safer
than medical management.
Q. Why do I need several chiropractic treatments to heal completely?
A. As with orthodontic treatment which causes a gradual realignment
of the teeth over a period of time, chiropractic treatments also require
a series
of visits.
